Week 14: Lori Nelson Lee

This Mamapreneur inspires Mamas to REMEMBER WE ALL HAVE A Book IN US AND A Story OF Perserverance

Upon graduating from Howard University, Lori Nelson Lee released her first children’s book, Hillary's Big Business Adventure, a book that introduces the concept of entrepreneurship to young kids. Lori's book was added to several elementary schools in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Ohio among others. Her book has appeared on Let's Talk Live (ABC), The 10! Show (NBC), CBN News (CBN), Speak Up! (CW), Eyewitness News (CBS), The Coffee Shop (ABC), and My Fox DC (Fox). It was also featured at the Congressional Black Caucus Author Pavilion and in Publisher's Weekly (Independent Publishing Edition) and Baker & Taylor’s Books For Growing Minds. In February 2017, Lori's publishing company (Nelson Publishing) was a featured publisher in the popular Just Like Me book subscription box for children of color. Shortly after the release of her book, Lori decided to add filmmaker to her resume as another form of storytelling. Her first project, a screenwriting competition, won her a spot as a finalist in the 2008 American Black Film Festival sponsored Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship Lab competition. Her second project, a 90 second film competition, won the 2009 Allstate Insurance Be Reel Community Voice Film contest (optioned by Burrell Communications for The Root). Since then, Lori's short films Two Weeks, When Life Gives You Shoestrings, and Unraveled have been finalists and winners in several film competitions.

Lori also directed music videos (What's Missin', It's About Time and Pro Bono) for hip-hop artist and husband, Tracey Lee. Her web-TV series, The Archives has included appearances by Chubb Rock (Hip-Hop Artist), Eric Roberson (Grammy-Nominated R&B Singer/Songwriter), 9th Wonder (Grammy-Nominated Producer), DJ Young Guru (Tour DJ & Engineer for Jay-Z), and actors Omari Hardwick, Dorian Missick, and Cory Hardrict.

In 2015, Lori co-wrote the short film, Our Vows with up and coming Chicago filmmaker, Maurice Dortch. In the same year, she also released her second children's book, Danica Dramatica - Queen Me.

Whats your HUSTLE?

I hustle entertainment. I own and operate a children's book publishing company, and co-own and operate a music and video/film production company with my husband.

Who/What inspired YOUR HUSTLE?

My hustle started with the creation of my first book, which was encouraged by my mother and inspired by the birth of my niece. My mother, an advent book lover wanted to purchase books for my infant niece. When we set out to look for fun books geared towards African American children, we found the selection of available books to be limited. So, we decided to write our own. I decided to build a company around those 2 books. A couple years later I expanded the business, with the help of my husband (a hip-hop artist and entertainment lawyer) to include music and video/film projects to our hustle.

How are you “Hustling up” Mamapreneurs to the next level?

I'm an advent believer in sharing information and experiences. Sharing knowledge and lessons learned lessens the costly need to constantly recreate the wheel. Let's build together, grow together, and be great together.
